McLean Creek OHV Area — Alberta's Premier Off-Road Destination
McLean Creek is the most developed and accessible OHV destination in the Calgary region — 30 minutes south of Calgary on Highway 22 and Hwy 549. Alberta Environment and Parks manages the area specifically for off-highway vehicle use, making it the most predictable and legally straightforward place to ride near Airdrie.
The area covers thousands of hectares of foothills terrain with a networked trail system ranging from flat beginner loops to demanding advanced ridgelines. A large staging area with trailer parking, outhouse facilities, and clear signage makes it practical for families and first-time visitors.
Beginner Loop (Green)
BeginnerFlat, wide trails through mixed forest. Ideal for new riders and families with youth ATVs. Minimal elevation change, clearly marked intersections.
Valley Creek Connector (Blue)
IntermediateRolling terrain with moderate climbs and some creek crossings. Well-traveled, great intro to technical riding without committing to extreme terrain.
Ridge Challenge (Black)
AdvancedSteep climbs, loose shale descents, and tight switchbacks. Not recommended for stock ATVs without suspension modifications. Experienced riders only.
UTV / Side-by-Side Route
IntermediateWider trail network accommodating UTVs up to 60 inches. Bypasses tight single-track sections. Connects the main staging area to the upper plateaus.
Trail conditions change seasonally. Check Alberta Environment and Parks trail status pages before your trip — closures during wet conditions protect the trail surface for future riders.
Ghost Lake & Waiporous Creek Trails
If McLean Creek is your first ride of the season, Ghost Lake and Waiporous are where you go when you want more technical terrain and fewer crowds. Both areas are within 45-60 minutes of Airdrie and offer a different character than the managed OHV park environment.
These areas involve more route-finding and less groomed trail infrastructure — rewarding for experienced riders, but less forgiving for beginners. Come prepared with a GPS track and a riding partner.
Ghost Lake OHV Staging Area
Located approximately 45 minutes west of Calgary along Highway 1A, the Ghost Lake area offers access to the Ghost River Wilderness Area trails. The terrain is more rugged than McLean Creek — rockier approaches and more challenging water crossings. Best accessed with a capable ATV or UTV rather than a beginner bike. The views across the Ghost Reservoir make it worth the extra drive.
Tip: Arrive early — the small staging area fills up on summer weekends.
Waiporous Creek Trail Network
Waiporous sits about one hour northwest of Calgary via Highway 1A and Waiporous Road. The network follows creek drainages through aspen and spruce, with several stream crossings that are rideable in summer but can be challenging in spring runoff. Good intermediate riding with enough variety to keep it interesting for a full-day ride.
Tip: Check conditions before you go — spring crossings can be impassable after heavy rain.
Sibbald Flats Area
Located along Highway 68 (the Sibbald Creek Trail), Sibbald Flats provides access to networked forest roads and OHV-designated areas within Kananaskis Country. The terrain is more open than Waiporous with good visibility and predictable trail surfaces. Popular for dual-sport motorcycles as well as ATVs.
Tip: Kananaskis Conservation Pass required — purchase before arrival.
What You Need to Know Before Hitting the Trails
OHV registration, helmet laws, and trail permits are not optional in Alberta — they are enforced, and fines are substantial. Getting these right before your first trip saves you from a costly lesson on the trailhead.
Alberta has some of the most detailed OHV regulations in Canada. The rules exist to manage trail damage, reduce conflict between user groups, and protect liability for both riders and land managers. Compliance is straightforward once you understand what is needed.
OHV Registration
All ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes operated on public land in Alberta must display a valid OHV registration plate. Registration is done through Alberta Registries — you can register at any registry agent. The plate must be clearly visible from behind. Unregistered operation on Crown land is a ticketable offence.
Helmet Laws
An approved helmet is mandatory for all OHV operators and passengers in Alberta, regardless of age. Helmets must meet DOT (US) or ECE 22.05 (European) safety standards. Half-shell bicycle helmets and novelty helmets do not qualify. Full-face helmets are strongly recommended for trail riding where branches and debris are a hazard.
Liability Insurance
Third-party liability insurance is required for operating an OHV on public land. Many home insurance policies can extend to cover OHVs — check with your broker. Dedicated ATV insurance policies are also available. Without insurance, you are personally liable for any damage or injury caused during your ride.
Trail Permits & Conservation Passes
Kananaskis Country requires a Kananaskis Conservation Pass for all motorized vehicle parking at designated day use areas. McLean Creek and several other managed OHV areas may require specific trail passes through the managing OHV club. Check the Alberta OHV Association website for current permit requirements before heading out.

ATV Trails Near Airdrie — Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need OHV registration for riding on private land in Alberta?
No. OHV registration is required for riding on public land managed by Alberta Environment and Parks, but if you are riding entirely on private property with the landowner's permission, registration is not required. If your ride crosses any public land, roads, or Crown land, you need a valid OHV registration displaying your licence plate.
Which trails near Calgary allow UTVs and side-by-sides?
McLean Creek OHV Area is the primary destination that allows UTVs, side-by-sides, and other wider off-highway vehicles in the Calgary region. Most designated OHV areas permit UTVs as long as they are registered and the operator carries liability insurance. Ghost Lake and Waiporous trails have some sections that are ATV-width only — check the Alberta OHV trail maps before trailering a wide UTV.
What is the best season to ride McLean Creek OHV Area?
Late June through early October is the prime window. Spring thaw (April-May) often leaves trails muddy and eroded, and Alberta Environment and Parks occasionally issues closures to protect the trail surface during wet conditions. July and August offer the driest, most predictable conditions. Fall riding in September is excellent — trails are firm and the aspen colour adds to the experience.
Are there beginner-friendly ATV trails near Airdrie?
Yes. McLean Creek OHV Area has beginner-rated loops designed for new riders and family outings. These trails avoid the steep technical sections and stay on wider, better-maintained paths. Ghost Lake has flatter terrain suitable for beginners in certain sections. If you are new to off-road riding, arrive on a weekday when traffic is lighter and stick to the marked beginner loops before exploring advanced areas.
Can kids ride ATVs on Alberta trails?
Yes, but age and engine size restrictions apply. Alberta requires riders under 14 to use ATVs with engine sizes appropriate to their age and body size, and they must be supervised by an adult. Children under 14 cannot operate ATVs on public land without direct adult supervision. Helmets are mandatory for all ages. Youth ATVs (50cc-90cc) are the appropriate starting point for children — full-size ATVs are not suitable for young riders.
What equipment is required by law for ATV riding in Alberta?
Alberta law requires: an approved helmet (DOT or ECE certified), valid OHV registration with licence plate displayed, liability insurance for riding on public land, and age-appropriate operation. The ATV must also have working headlights and taillights if ridden during low-light conditions. A trail permit or OHV trail pass is required for designated managed trail systems. Eye protection is strongly recommended but not provincially mandated.
