About the Scholarship
Shift Happens Auto Sales is a used vehicle dealership based in Airdrie, Alberta. We work with people who are working with all credit situations and across a wide range of financial circumstances. What we see regularly — through the conversations we have with customers every week — is how much transportation access shapes what's possible in a person's life.
A reliable vehicle can be the difference between landing a job and not making the interview. Between staying in a program and dropping out because the commute isn't possible. Between accessing healthcare and deferring it indefinitely. Between rural opportunity and urban necessity. Transportation is rarely discussed as a social mobility factor the way education or housing is — but anyone who has lived without it understands exactly how much it limits what's achievable.
This scholarship invites post-secondary students to explore that intersection through personal experience. We're not looking for a policy paper or an economic analysis. We're looking for a story — your story, or someone's whose life you've witnessed — told honestly and specifically about how transportation shaped a real opportunity.
Eligibility
This scholarship is intentionally broad in its eligibility criteria. We want to hear from a wide range of students with diverse experiences.
Essay Topic
“How has transportation — or lack of access to it — shaped a significant life experience or opportunity for you?”
What We're Looking For
We want a specific, honest account of a real experience — not a general argument about transportation policy or a survey of the literature. Tell us about a concrete moment, decision, opportunity, or obstacle where transportation was a meaningful variable. Ground your essay in the specific details that only you can provide.
The Experience Can Be Yours or Someone Else's
You don't have to write about yourself. If you've witnessed how transportation access (or the lack of it) shaped someone's trajectory — a family member, a community, a person you've worked alongside — that's equally valid, provided the account is specific and observed firsthand. Third-hand summaries or abstract discussions are not what we're after.
Length and Format
500-750 words. No formatting requirements beyond being readable — no specific font, margins, or citation style required. Write in your natural voice. Submissions that read as academic exercises rather than genuine reflection are less competitive than submissions that read as honest personal accounts.
How to Apply
The application process is intentionally simple. We don't require transcripts, references, or financial documentation.
Write Your Essay
Compose a 500-750 word essay responding to the prompt above. Write in a document you can attach as a PDF or Word document, or paste directly into the email body.
Prepare Your Application Email
Your application email should include:
- Your full name
- Your current or enrolled institution and program of study
- Your expected graduation date or current year of study
- Your essay (as an attachment or pasted in the body)
Send Your Application
Email your completed application to:
Note: Applications submitted after 11:59 PM MST on July 31, 2026 will not be considered. We recommend submitting early to avoid technical issues. You will receive an email acknowledgment within 5 business days of your submission.
Selection Criteria
Applications are evaluated solely on the essay. There is no GPA minimum, no financial need requirement, and no preference for any field of study. The selection committee consists of Shift Happens Auto Sales staff.
Specificity and Authenticity (Primary Criterion)
The strongest essays are grounded in specific, concrete details — not general claims. "I couldn't get to work reliably" is less compelling than the specific account of what that actually looked like: the routes attempted, the accommodations sought, the moments where it failed. Details that could only come from someone who actually lived through the experience are what distinguish the best essays from competent summaries.
Insight and Reflection
We're looking for essays that illuminate something — that make the reader understand transportation access in a way they didn't fully grasp before. This doesn't require a grand conclusion. A small, honest insight developed with care is more valuable than a broad thesis stated confidently but not shown.
Writing Quality
Clear, readable writing in your natural voice. This is not an academic writing competition — we're not looking for complex sentence structures or formal register. We are looking for essays that communicate effectively and hold the reader's attention. Good grammar and clear organization matter; performative sophistication does not.
Relevance to the Prompt
The essay must directly engage with the transportation prompt. Essays that treat transportation as a peripheral detail in a broader narrative are not responsive to the prompt and will not be competitive.
