Private Sale Financing — How the Rates Work
What Is Private Sale Car Financing?
Private sale car financing means borrowing money to purchase a vehicle from an individual seller rather than a licensed dealership. Sounds simple — but the mechanics are fundamentally different from a standard dealer transaction, and most people discover this when their bank turns them down.
When you buy from a dealer, the lender knows exactly what they are funding: a licensed dealer has inspected the vehicle, cleared any liens, and takes responsibility for the transaction. When you try to finance a private purchase, lenders face unknowns — is the title clean? Are there outstanding liens? What is the vehicle actually worth? Most specialty lenders simply will not take that risk on their own.
When we facilitate your private sale, we solve those unknowns. We run the lien search, coordinate the inspection if required, verify the title, and handle the registration transfer. With those pieces in place, we can approach lenders with a properly documented transaction — and access financing programs that are not available to someone walking into a bank with a Kijiji listing.
How Private Sale Financing Works Through Us
The process is more structured than a bank loan application and more buyer-protective than a cash-only private deal. Here is what happens from first contact to driving away.
Find Your Vehicle
You identify the private sale vehicle you want — Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace, AutoTrader private listings, or word of mouth. Send us the link or the details: year, make, model, mileage, asking price, and the seller's location.
We Run Due Diligence
We search Alberta's Personal Property Registry to confirm there are no outstanding liens on the vehicle. We also verify the VIN history and flag any issues before you invest time or money. This step protects you from buying someone else's debt.
Inspection if Required
If the vehicle is from out of province or the lender requires an inspection, we help coordinate an AMVIC-certified inspection. Most lenders want confirmation the vehicle is mechanically sound before funding a private purchase. The inspection fee is typically $150–$300.
We Structure Your Financing
We submit your application to lenders in our network who fund private sale transactions — not just dealer inventory. Your income, credit profile, and the vehicle's value all factor into placement. We match your application to the lender whose criteria you actually meet.
Approval and Completion
Once approved, we facilitate the transaction. The seller gets paid, you get the vehicle with clean title in your name, and all registration paperwork is handled. You leave with a properly documented vehicle and a payment schedule — not a car with a stranger's lien attached.
Why Finance a Private Sale Through a Dealer?
The honest answer: because the alternative is either cash or a bank that may not approve you. Here is what you gain by going through us instead of trying to arrange private sale financing on your own.
Access to lenders who fund private sales
Most Canadians trying to finance a private purchase hit a wall at their bank. Our lender network includes specialty lenders who specifically fund private sale transactions — including for customers who could not get approved elsewhere. We know which lenders to approach and how to structure the file.
We handle the paperwork you would otherwise miss
A private sale in Alberta requires a lien search, a bill of sale, registration transfer, and in some cases an out-of-province inspection. Miss any of these and you can end up with a vehicle you do not legally own, or one that can be repossessed by the previous owner's lender. We handle all of it.
One application, 20+ lenders
When you go to a bank for a private purchase loan, you get one answer. If they decline, your next application is another hard inquiry on your credit file. We submit one application and place it with the most appropriate lender in our network — fewer credit hits, faster decisions.
We work with all credit situations
Banks typically only fund private sale loans for applicants with strong credit. We work with customers across the credit spectrum — first-time buyers, people rebuilding after a rough patch, and those who have simply never established credit. The vehicle and your income matter; a perfect credit score is not the only path to approval.
Seller protection and buyer protection
Private deals often fall apart over trust. When we facilitate the transaction, both parties benefit: the seller knows they will receive payment and is not dealing with a scam, and the buyer knows the vehicle is free of liens before money changes hands. The structured process reduces risk for everyone.
Alberta Requirements for Private Sale Financing
Alberta has specific rules for private vehicle sales. These are not optional — they exist to protect buyers from taking on someone else's debt or registering a vehicle with unresolved issues. When we facilitate your transaction, we handle all of these requirements as part of the process.
Personal Property Registry (PPR) Lien Search
Before any money changes hands, we search Alberta's PPR to confirm the vehicle has no outstanding liens. If a lender has a security interest in the vehicle and you pay the seller without clearing it, the lender can legally repossess the vehicle from you — even though you paid for it. The search costs approximately $15. We run it as a standard part of every private sale facilitation.
AMVIC Inspection
AMVIC (Automotive Business Regulation) inspections are mandatory for out-of-province vehicles being registered in Alberta. For in-province private sales, inspections are not legally required — but most lenders require one before funding. An AMVIC inspection documents the vehicle's mechanical condition and confirms it is roadworthy. It typically costs $150–$300 and takes 1–2 hours at a licensed shop. We coordinate this as part of the private sale process.
Bill of Sale
A written bill of sale is required for all Alberta vehicle sales, private or otherwise. It must include the purchase price, date, VIN, both parties' names and signatures, and vehicle description. We prepare the bill of sale as part of the transaction documentation — it is not something the buyer and seller need to negotiate independently when going through us.
Registration Transfer
After a private sale, the vehicle must be re-registered in the buyer's name at an Alberta registry agent. You must have valid insurance before driving it off the seller's property. When we facilitate the transaction, we handle the registration paperwork so you are legally on the road immediately — no trips to the registry on your own, no window between purchase and coverage.
What Vehicles Qualify for Private Sale Financing?
Lenders have specific requirements for the vehicles they will fund. These protect their collateral position — if you default, they need to be able to recover value. Here are the typical criteria, though requirements vary by lender and your specific application.
Not sure if your vehicle qualifies? Send us the year, make, model, mileage, and asking price. We will tell you what we can do before you spend any time or money on the process.
Why Not Just Get a Bank Loan for a Private Sale?
Some buyers with strong credit can arrange private sale financing directly through their bank or credit union. If you have a 720+ credit score, stable employment, and a clean file, a bank pre-approval is a legitimate path. But it comes with limitations most people only discover after applying.
Banks typically decline challenged credit for private purchases
If your credit score is below roughly 650, most major banks will not fund a private sale — period. They want dealer transactions for anything that is not prime credit. Our lender network includes specialty lenders who specifically design programs for challenged credit private purchases. The bank's decline is not the end of the road.
Each bank application is a hard credit inquiry
Every time you apply for a loan, the lender pulls your credit report. Each pull is a hard inquiry that temporarily lowers your score. If you apply to your bank, get declined, then apply to your credit union, get declined, and try a third option — you have now taken three hard inquiries in a short period, making the next approval harder. We submit one application and distribute it internally to the right lender. One inquiry, multiple shots at approval.
Banks do not handle the paperwork for you
Even if your bank approves a private sale loan, they hand you a cheque and step back. The lien search, inspection, bill of sale, registration transfer — all of that is your problem to navigate. Miss the PPR search and you could buy a vehicle with an existing lien. Miss the out-of-province inspection and your registration application gets rejected. When we facilitate the deal, these pieces are handled as part of the service.
Private Sale Financing — Frequently Asked Questions
Can you finance a private sale vehicle in Alberta?
Yes — but not the way most people expect. Banks and credit unions sometimes finance private purchases for applicants with strong credit. However, most specialty lenders only fund dealer transactions. When you finance a private sale through us, we facilitate the deal: we handle the lien check, vehicle registration, and paperwork, and the seller gets paid through the transaction just like a dealer sale. You get financing access you would not have going it alone.
What is the process for financing a private sale car through a dealer?
You identify the vehicle you want on Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace, or another platform. We review the vehicle details, run a lien check on Alberta's Personal Property Registry, order an AMVIC inspection if needed, and structure your financing application. Once approved, we facilitate the sale — the seller receives payment and you drive away with proper documentation and a financed vehicle.
Do I need an inspection for a private sale vehicle?
An AMVIC inspection is required for any vehicle being registered in Alberta that has been out of province. For in-province private sales, an inspection is strongly recommended and most lenders require it before funding. We can help coordinate an inspection as part of the private sale financing process — it protects both you and the lender.
Can I finance a private sale car with bad credit?
We work with all credit situations. Private sale financing with challenged credit is harder to place than a standard dealer transaction, but it is not impossible. The vehicle condition, your income, and the loan-to-value ratio all factor in. We submit your application to the lenders most likely to approve your specific situation rather than the ones with the most advertising.
What vehicles qualify for private sale financing?
Most street-legal vehicles with a clean title can qualify: cars, trucks, SUVs, and in some cases motorcycles. Lenders apply age and mileage restrictions — typically no older than 10 years and under 200,000 km, though exceptions exist. Salvage-title vehicles, write-offs, and vehicles with unresolved liens do not qualify until those issues are resolved.
What does it cost to finance a private sale through a dealer?
Our financing rates run 6.99–29.99% APR on amounts from $5,000 to $45,000 over 12–96 month terms. There are transaction costs associated with facilitating a private sale — lien search, registration transfer, and administrative processing. These vary by deal. Contact us with the vehicle details and we will give you a clear picture of total costs before you commit.
