Your pay is not always just a paycheque: some overtime, a side gig, maybe some cash. Or you are self-employed and the lender asks for papers that do not quite match what you have. In underwriting, "income" means income you can show on paper, and that is not always what you think of as income.

If you work for an employer, start with our page on what car lenders verify when you work: pay stubs, employer letters and how overtime shows up. This post covers the other kinds of income and what proves each one.

Three quick answers — soft check, no commitment.

What Income Counts for Car Loan Approval in Alberta?

Income a lender can confirm in writing. That means pay from an employer, self-employment income shown on your tax return and, with some lenders, pension, disability, EI and other payments that have a statement behind them. Cash with no paper trail cannot be shown. Every lender sets its own list and decides each file. We review every application and call you back.

Which Income Counts, and What Proves It?

IncomeWhat lenders commonly ask for
Pay from an employerA recent pay stub, a letter from your employer, or a T4. Some lenders ask for two of these.
Overtime, bonuses and commissionEach lender decides how much counts. A T4 adds up the whole year. One bank asks for the last two years of T1 General with Notices of Assessment for variable income such as commission or overtime.
Self-employment and contract workYour Notice of Assessment and T1 General. Some lenders also list the T2125, bank statements, or financial statements if you are incorporated. For more, see self-employed car financing.
Gig and app workLenders usually look at tax documents more than pay stubs: your T1 General and Notice of Assessment, and some also list bank statements. See gig worker car financing.
Pension, disability and annuity paymentsA statement from the payer, plus bank statements that show the money landing. One bank page names these among income that can be proven.
Employment InsuranceYour EI benefit statement. EI can be paid for 14 to 45 weeks, so in our experience a lender asks how many weeks are left. See car loans on EI.
Support payments and rental incomeIn our experience: a court order or agreement, or a lease, plus bank statements that show the payments, and your tax return for rental income. Each lender decides how much counts.
Cash, gifts and family transfersIn our experience these do not count. There is no paper that shows they will continue.

How Much Income Do I Need?

There is no single minimum, because every lender sets its own. In our experience, lenders typically look for about $2,800 a month in income you can prove, from all sources combined. If you are under that, or most of your income is cash, talk to us first. Our affordability page shows what a payment looks like next to your income.

What If My Pay Follows the Seasons?

If your work follows the seasons or a rotation, one pay stub may not show your usual pay. A T4 adds up the whole year. For example, $85,000 earned over a year averages about $7,083 a month across twelve months. How a lender averages seasonal pay is not published, so bring your latest T4 and Notice of Assessment. Our page on seasonal worker car financing covers pay that follows the calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my spouse's income count if they are not on the loan?

In our experience, only the people on the application count. If your spouse's income would help, you can apply together, and the lender then looks at both people's files. Our post on applying alone or with a co-applicant covers the trade-offs.

Can I include overtime income in my car loan application?

You can list it. None of the lender pages we read gives a formula for overtime, so each lender decides how much of it counts. A pay stub shows one pay period, a T4 adds up the year, and a letter from your employer that sets out your pay can show the pattern.

Do regular gifts from my parents count as income?

In our experience, no. One bank says it must appear reasonable that your income will continue into the future, and a family gift can stop at any time. Income with paper behind it, such as pay, a pension or a tax return, is what a lender can work with.

How long do I need to be employed?

Lenders set their own rules on time on the job. One Canadian auto lender publishes a minimum of three months on the job, with exceptions when you take a new job in the same or a similar field after at least a year at your last one. Our page on starting a new job in Alberta covers offer letters and probation.
